Wing Zero -- Trump is the middle box
poison_us -- Of course, I'd only make it using people who haven't yet been indicted. That'd be cheating.

Description[edit]

ScmDraft 2 is an advanced third-party map editor for StarCraft: Brood War. It is widely considered to be the most feature-rich map editor for StarCraft[1][2], and it is a primary tool for creating maps for competitive StarCraft tournaments.[3]

One of the few things ScmDraft 2 cannot do is display terrain levels. As a result, map makers tend to use CHKDraft to debug terrain levels while testing. However, with the announcement of StarCraft: Remastered, Suicidal Insanity has officially resumed working on SCMDraft, so there will be a new version in the foreseeable future with improved UI, the ability to show terrain flag overlays (for things like terrain level, walkability, vision blocking properties etc.) and possibly some kind of pathfinding prediction or simulation.[4]

History[edit]

ScmDraft is the first third-party map editor for StarCraft 1. The project was started in December 2001, and was written in Delphi. This original version was updated and improved for roughly 2 years, until it was able to match StarEdit in terms of features and capabilities. However a key feature - isometric terrain - was missing. Due to the frustration of attempting to implement this, work was halted for almost a year.

In the summer of 2003, work began anew on understanding the algorithm behind isometrical tile matching. After this work was completed, the first versions of ScmDraft 2 were written and released. While this started out only being able to edit terrain, it quickly grew to cover all other layers. There were also experiments in using Direct3D, DirectDraw, and OpenGL to render the maps. These were however abandoned when video cards stopped supporting 256 color textures. This is the codebase the current version is based on, where - roughly 3 years after the first release - any feature imaginable has been implemented.

Currently, ScmDraft 2 can do everything StarEdit and all the various SCXE modes can do, as well as a number of things not possible with either of these programs.[5]

Features[edit]

ScmDraft 2 offers many additional features over StarEdit, the editor bundled with the game by Blizzard Entertainment. Many of these additional features are now considered necessary for balance purposes when designing maps. These include placing wider ramps (in various configurations and dimensions), placing of individual tiles, unit and building stacking, and the ability to place things off-center (custom grid snap).

Editor features (short)[edit]

  • Zoom
  • Open multiple maps
  • View multiple maps simultaneously
  • Overlay locations
  • Custom grid
  • Snap to custom grid
  • Buildings anywhere
  • Various illegal placements
  • Resize map
  • Change tileset
  • Save map image
  • Brushes
  • Unit stacking
