Configuring a USB to Serial Converter

Last update - 6/25/2018

Click on the + sign next to Ports (COM & LPT). The list of avail-able ports will be revealed. You will see one entitled USB Serial Port, with the assigned COM port number identified in brackets. To work with most of the tools you are likely to use with microcontrollers, the COM port should be 1, 2, 3, or 4. Open the Device Manager by right clicking “My computer” and selecting control panel. Look under Ports (COM & LPT). You should see an open port named 'USB Serial Port' Right click on the 'USB Serial Port' and choose the 'Update Driver Software' option. Next, choose the 'Browse my computer for Driver software' option.

To install serial ports and COM ports using these system-supplied components, do the following: Provide an INF file that specifies the Ports device setup class and the Serial function driver as the service for the port. To configure a serial port as COM port, comply with the requirements that are defined in Configuration of COM Ports. It defines Windows Runtime classes that can use to communicate with a USB CDC device through a serial port or some abstraction of a serial port. The classes provide functionality to discover such serial device, read and write data, and control serial-specific properties for flow control, such as setting baud rate, signal states.

Some of the newer laptops of the past few years no longer have traditional RS232 serial ports, however the CROPSCAN MSR System can still be operated or connected to these laptops by use of a USB-to-Serial converter. Various brands of USB-to-Serial converters are available at most computer stores or from numerous computer related websites by mail order.

NOTE: Be sure to install the appropriate USB-to-Serial driver for the Windows operating system on your PC. You may need to visit the USB-to-Serial manufacturer's webpage for the latest windows drivers. Some of the older USB-to-Serial adapters are not compatible with the newer versions of Windows and you may need to get a newer USB-to-Serial adapter.

Enter the COM port number, found above, at the COM port prompt in the CROPSCAN MSR Software (TERMINAL, RETRIEVE, etc.).

Note: If that same COM port is used for other devices (GPS, PocketPC or PDA synchronizing) be sure to end those programs or configure them not to be using the COM port when using the COM port with the MSR System software, otherwise erratic behavior can result.
